Celebrating Sauvignon Blanc!
Friday 2nd May is Sauvignon Blanc Day, so we’re celebrating Sauvignon Blanc – one of the world’s most popular and loved white grape varieties.
It’s a grape that’s grown all over the globe, but its true home is the Loire Valley in France. Here, it’s responsible for the crisp, mineral-driven wines of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé – elegant, refreshing, and distinctly expressive of place.
Within France, Sauvignon Blanc also plays a key role in producing the dry whites of Bordeaux, often blended with Sémillon, as well as the lusciously sweet, mouthwatering wines of Sauternes, where its acidity balances the richness beautifully.
Interestingly, although these wines were long admired, many wine lovers didn’t always realise that they shared a common grape – Sauvignon Blanc.
The grape itself truly shot to fame when it found a new home in New Zealand. In Marlborough, the variety took on a whole new character – bursting with gooseberry, passionfruit, and lime, and full of vibrant acidity. That unmistakable New World style catapulted Sauvignon Blanc to international stardom, and it’s remained a favourite ever since.
Whether you love the crisp, flinty styles of the Loire, the bold tropical notes from New Zealand, or something in between – Sauvignon Blanc has a style for every palate.
