Port & Fortified Wine — Your Questions Answered

The three main styles are Ruby, Tawny and White. Ruby port is deep red, fruity and full-bodied — the style most people picture when they think of port. Tawny port is aged in smaller oak barrels, giving it a nutty, amber character that develops beautifully over 10, 20, 30 or 40 years. White port is made from white grapes and ranges from bone dry to lightly sweet — delicious served chilled as an aperitif. We stock all three, including aged tawnies from Barao de Vilar from 10 to 50 years old.

Tawny port gets its name from its warm amber colour, which develops as it ages in small oak casks over many years. Unlike ruby port, which preserves fresh fruit flavours, tawny takes on notes of dried fruit, toasted nuts, caramel and gentle spice. The age on the label — 10, 20, 30 or 40 Year Old — refers to the average age of the wines blended together, so older tawnies are richer and more complex. Our Barao de Vilar hand-painted tawnies are among our most popular bottles and make exceptional gifts.

Vintage port is only declared in exceptional years — typically a handful per decade — when the quality is outstanding enough to bottle and age as a single harvest. Celebrated recent declarations include 2017, 2011, 2007 and 2003. The good news is you don't need a declared vintage to enjoy exceptional port. Late Bottle Vintage (LBV) port offers similar depth at a more approachable price — our Barao de Vilar LBV and Quinta da Pedra Alta Vintage Port 2018 are both great starting points.

It depends on what you're after. For a first bottle or an everyday pour, our Windsor Ruby and Windsor Special Reserve are reliable and affordable. For a gift or a special occasion, the Barao de Vilar hand-painted tawnies — available in 10, 20, 30 and 40 Year Old — are hard to beat. If you're looking for something truly memorable, the Barao de Vilar 50 Year Old Tawny is one of the finest bottles we stock. Not sure? Our team is always happy to help — just get in touch.

The best port is the one that suits the moment. A chilled White Port works beautifully as an aperitif with tonic and a slice of lemon. A Ruby port is a classic match for strong cheese or chocolate after dinner. A mature Tawny is wonderful on its own, slightly chilled, or alongside nuts and dried fruit. If you're buying as a gift, an aged tawny in a presentation bottle rarely disappoints. Browse our full range above or speak to us if you'd like a recommendation.
