Looking through rosé-tinted glasses
There’s always something exciting about a glass of rosé—its soft blush, crisp texture, and fruit character create the perfect combination for relaxed afternoons particularly during the summer months. But despite its role in modern culture, rosé is in fact one of the world’s oldest styles of wine.
The earliest known versions of rosé trace back to Ancient Greece, where it was considered civilised to dilute wine. Blending white and red grapes, early winemakers would crush them by foot, and ferment the juice in pithoi, large ceramic vessels, giving a pale, slightly tannic pink wine.
When the Romans arrived in Provence, rosé was already a known and coveted commodity. The Romans, skilled in trade and promotion, helped establish Provence as the heartland of fine pink wine. A legacy that endures to this day.
And Provence rosé truly is something special. Characterised by its delicate salmon colour and bright, mineral-driven palate, it captures the essence of Mediterranean living: leisurely, sun-drenched, and quietly luxurious. With notes of wild strawberry, citrus peel, and herbs, it’s the perfect partner to seafood, summer evenings, and good conversation.
During the mid-20th century, we saw the rise of sweet, pink wines which had huge commercial success, but at the same time this changed the perception of rose to something less refined, and unfortunately the reputation of rose suffered as a result.
However, in the early 2000s Provence producers wanted to change this perception, refining their techniques and reintroducing the world to dry, elegant rosé, and we saw the rise of popular names such as Whispering Angel from Chateau d'Esclans.
Today, rosé enjoys a new-found prestige and is a hugely popular wine style. Whether enjoyed as a thirst-quenching aperitif or paired with refined cuisine, rosé has reclaimed its rightful place at the table. A glass of rosé is not just a nod to summer, it’s a tribute to centuries of winemaking heritage, gracefully carried into the modern day.
