Malbec World Day - 17th April 2025

Malbec World Day - 17th April 2025

Malbec World Day, which takes place on 17th April 2025 is an international celebration of the classic red grape, which has very much found its home in Argentina. The worldwide celebration of Malbec aims to highlight the qualities of the grape, but also celebrate its contribution to creating world class wines in Argentina.

Most people associate Malbec with Argentina, however it is actually native to France, and was originally grown as a blending grape in South of France and around Bordeaux. Known as Côt in France, it produces fairly gamey style wines. However in 1956 a terrible frost killed off over 75% of the Malbec in France, and has never fully recovered here.

In Argentina, its a different story, and Malbec really thrives here, particularly in Mendoza where it was initially imported to. It produces serenely velvety and fruity wines, high in alcohol and colour, often with smooth tannins. Malbec wines can be produced in a variety of styles, from simple and fruity, to full bodied and oaked. They pair fantastically with red meats, particularly those barbequed or smoked.

This Malbec World Day celebrate with a delicious glass of Malbec from The Wine Shop. Explore our range of Malbec wines here
