Spotlight on the Producer - Botter Wines

Spotlight on the Producer - Botter Wines

This week we are turning our spotlight to the fantastic Italian producer Botter wines. Founded in 1928 by Carlo and Maria Botter in a small town near Venice, the winery is still family run and now in it's fourth generation.

Starting off as a small business selling wines in barrels, then in bottles in the 1960s and expanding to the international market in the 1970s, Botter is now one of the largest producers and exporters of Italian wines, with 1 out of every 35 bottles exported from Italy coming from Botter.

We spoke to Samuele Botter who shared with us some insights into the history of Botter and the family's passion for wine:Ā

"My name is Samuele and I'm the fourth generation of this incredible wine business. The company was first founded by my great grandfather Carlo, who sold wine into the Venetian bacari (taverns). As my grandfather took over, he ventured outside the borders, into neighboring France and Switzerland exporting not only our Veneto wines but gathering interests for other Italian grape varieties. Some of the of the partnerships he started still go on today. Ā

In the 1990s the third generation led by my father Luca took over and the business started taking on a different dimension. He brought the Botter name to the most remote corners of the world and developed rapports that went beyond trading; with these people we not only shared the global growth of Italian wines but have since then become true friends.
For me in particular this was inspiring and I have to thank both my parents for it; the curiosity to travel the world - from my mother who's a travelĀ journalist - and the joy of building amazing relationships along the way - from my father who now enjoys a network of friends all around world fromĀ years of hard work.

After starting my professional career in beverages on a different ABV, with various brewers, last year I've joined the family business - now ARGEA and the leading privately owned wine company in Italy.Ā

I am the only one of the new generation in the business, and for now it seems to remain that way. However the third generation was also not too large, allowing for each member to have a clear task and direction and avoiding the heated contrasts you might find in a large southern European family.
