The finer things in life...
On Friday 2nd May, guests were treated to a delicious evening of extra special wines at our Fine Wine Tasting.
The term 'Fine Wine' is not easy to define, and can often be subjective depending on the person drinking it. However, we generally consider a fine wine to be a wine that is outstanding in balance, complexity, length and intensity of flavours. This would mean that all elements of the wine are well balanced, with no harsh elements standing out. There would be a range of flavours and aromas, usually from carefully considered decisions the winemaker has made during and after fermentation (not just flavours from the grapes themselves). The wines would have a nice lengthy finish, with the flavours and mouthfeel lasting long after tasting. And the flavours would have the intensity, usually to support enjoying with food. Because of these factors, many fine wines are suitable for ageing for several years.
At our tasting, we tasted a variety of wines - some classics, and some surprises! We started with the fantastic Rock Angel from the famed Chateau D'Esclans, followed by the historical South African Estate Hartenberg's The Eleanor Chardonnay. Next was a powerful and perfumed Sancerre from Joseph Mellot, La Grande Chatelaine. It was interesting to discuss the qualities of these wines and the differences in winemaking decisions.
Next it was time for the reds. Starting with the elegant and refined Louis Jadot Celebration Beaune Premier Cru, a wine only made in years when the grapes are of exceptional quality, the award winning Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, Familia Pasqua's fruity and sumptious Amarone della Valpolicella. Lastly we enjoyed a big powerhouse wine the 1270 a Vuit Priorat which undoubtedly was the showstopper of the evening and had everybody talking!
