Why we chose it

“Garrus is the top of the Château d'Esclans range and the wine that made serious rosé a category of its own. Barrel fermented from near century old vines, it drinks more like a fine white Burgundy than a poolside pink.”

About this wine

Garrus is the wine that changed what people expect a rosé to be. It comes from a single parcel of vines approaching one hundred years old at Château d'Esclans, gently pressed and then fermented in 600 litre French oak demi muids. Eleven months on the lees with twice weekly stirring gives a pale, luminous wine of remarkable depth, showing white peach, citrus zest, toasted almond and a fine mineral thread. The finish is long, creamy and beautifully composed.

Château d'Esclans in the Côtes de Provence is the estate behind Whispering Angel, and Garrus sits at the very top of its range. Tasted blind, it is often mistaken for a fine white Burgundy, which tells you how to serve it: in a proper wine glass at 12 to 14°C, alongside lobster, turbot, roast chicken or a plate of aged Comté. It rewards keeping too, drinking beautifully for up to ten years from the vintage.

About the producer

Château d'Esclans is the Provence estate behind Whispering Angel, the wine that almost single-handedly changed the world's perception of rosé. Created by Sacha Lichine in 2006 from a historic Var estate near La Motte, the château works with old Grenache and Rolle vines to produce a range of Provence rosés at varying price points. Their wines — from the approachable Whispering Angel to the prestige Rock Angel and the estate bottling — set the benchmark for elegant, pale, dry Provençal rosé.
