Why we chose it

“Ancient vines — some over 100 years old — give this Zinfandel a concentration you just can’t fake. Blackberry jam, spice, real depth. One of my favourite California reds in the shop.”

About this wine

Not all vines are created equal. Cline's Ancient Vines Zinfandel is crafted from some of California's oldest surviving Zinfandel vines — plants that took root over a century ago and have spent decades slowly reaching deeper into the earth, producing grapes of remarkable concentration, character, and depth that younger vines simply cannot match.

Old vines produce small yields of intensely flavoured fruit, and the result in the glass is immediately apparent: a deep, inky ruby wine with a rich, complex nose of blackberry jam, ripe plum, dark cherry, and mocha, lifted by warm notes of vanilla, sweet spice, and a hint of roasted coffee. On the palate, the texture is characteristically velvety — generous and full-bodied, with dark fruit at the fore, layered complexity in the middle, and a long, warming finish that balances fruit richness with structure and depth.

Zinfandel is California's most characterful red grape, and Cline's old vines are among the finest source material available in the state. Established in 1982, Cline Cellars has been a champion of old vine Zinfandel for decades, preserving heritage vineyards that represent a living piece of Californian wine history and producing wines of genuine pedigree at accessible prices.

Pair with barbecued brisket, slow-cooked short ribs, smoky burgers, lamb chops with rosemary, hard aged cheeses, or hearty pasta with rich meat sauces. A wine made for the table — and for long, satisfying evenings.

About the producer

Cline Family Cellars was founded in 1982 by Fred Cline in Oakley, California, and is now based at a historic winery in the Carneros AVA of Sonoma. The estate is celebrated for its Ancient Vines range, drawn from some of California's oldest Zinfandel, Mourvèdre, and Carignan vineyards, many over 80 years old, producing wines of extraordinary complexity and authenticity.
