About this wine
La Cabeza de Perro Tinto – Fresh and Vibrant Bierzo Mencía
La Cabeza de Perro Tinto is a youthful and expressive red from Bierzo, created to capture the freshness, energy and easy-going charm of the region's wines. Produced mainly from Mencía with a small percentage of Godello co-fermented in the traditional Bierzo style, this is a wine designed for relaxed drinking, lively conversation and reaching naturally for another glass.
The wine comes from some of Cantarina's newest vineyards in Paraje El Cotelo near Villafranca del Bierzo. Its unusual name, translating as 'The Dog's Head', comes from the aerial shape of the vineyard itself, which resembles the outline of a dog's head from above. South-facing vines planted between 550 and 600 metres altitude grow in clay and stony soils that help preserve freshness and minerality in the finished wine.
Hand-harvested in small 15kg cases at the end of August, the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts in stainless steel before ageing for 12 months in steel vats to maintain purity, brightness and fruit character. Bright cherry, bramble and wild berry fruits lead the palate, supported by delicate floral notes, subtle herbs and a fresh mineral edge. The texture is juicy and supple, with lively acidity and soft tannins making the wine wonderfully approachable and highly food-friendly. Fresh, characterful and unmistakably modern Bierzo, this is a superb red for tapas, charcuterie, grilled meats and relaxed evenings with friends.
