The tradition

What is Beaujolais Nouveau?

Every autumn, the villages of Beaujolais race to bottle the first wine of the harvest. It is fresh, fruity and made for celebrating, and its release is one of the most joyful dates in the wine calendar.

From vine to glass in weeks

Made from Gamay grapes picked only weeks before release. Whole bunches are fermented gently, which keeps the tannins soft and the fruit bright and juicy.

The third Thursday of November

By French rules the new wine cannot go on sale until the third Thursday of November. This year that is Thursday 19 November, and it is celebrated around the world.

Made for drinking now

Nouveau is not a wine for the cellar. It is at its fresh, fruity best over the winter months, which makes it perfect for sharing with friends.

Meet the grower

Jean-Michel Dupré, Beaujeu

Jean-Michel Dupré's vineyards are perched above the village of Beaujeu, in the heart of Beaujolais, south of Burgundy and north of Lyon. When he took over the estate from his father it covered only two hectares. Since then he has turned the old farm buildings into a winery and added well-placed plots in Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages, Morgon and Régnié.

He is passionate about the environment, farming with organic methods and keeping added sulphites to a minimum. He is working towards full organic certification plot by plot, so while his Nouveau is not yet certified, it is made the organic way.

Good to know

Your questions answered

When will my wine arrive?

Beaujolais Nouveau cannot be released before the third Thursday of November, which is Thursday 19 November this year. We send pre-orders out from release day and email your tracking details as soon as your order is on its way.

What if I order other wines at the same time?

Everything in the same order is sent together once the Nouveau is released. If you would like your other wines sooner, please place them as a separate order.

Does Mix & Save apply?

Yes. Beaujolais Nouveau counts towards Mix & Save across the whole shop: 5% off when you mix 6 or more eligible bottles, and 10% off at 12 or more. A dozen bottles also qualifies for free UK delivery.

Can I buy it in the shop?

Yes, you will find it in our Winscombe shop from release day, while stocks last. It went quickly last year, so pre-ordering is the surest way to get your bottles.

How long will it keep?

Nouveau is made to be enjoyed young. It is at its fresh, fruity best over the winter months, so there is no need to lay it down.

Is it organic?

Jean-Michel Dupré farms using organic methods and keeps added sulphites to a minimum. He is converting the estate to full organic certification plot by plot, so the Nouveau is not yet certified organic.
