“Doppio Passo Primitivo di Manduria Riserva is a step up from the standard Primitivo — more oak age, more concentration and depth. Dark, warm and genuinely impressive.”

About this wine

A Southern Italian Classic, Twice the Pleasure

Doppio Passo Primitivo di Manduria Riserva embodies the richness of Puglia's sun-soaked vineyards. Crafted using the traditional double step method, where grapes are harvested in two stages for extra concentration, it delivers deep layers of ripe blackberry, plum and sweet spice. The extended ageing brings velvety texture, soft tannins and hints of vanilla and cocoa, creating a wine of real depth and elegance.

Ideal with slow-cooked dishes, roasted meats or mature cheeses, this Riserva is a fine example of how southern Italy turns sunshine into liquid warmth.

About the producer

Casa Vinicola Botter was founded in 1928 when Carlo Botter and his wife Maria began selling wine in the village of Fossalta di Piave, near Venice. Now in its third generation under Luca, Annalisa, and Alessandro Botter, the family company has grown into one of Italy's largest wine exporters, with a capacity of 23.5 million litres and a range spanning every major Italian appellation. Their own labels — including Cortestrada — capture each region's character with reliability and craft.

You may prefer the standard version

I really like this wine in its standard version. We have had it many times at a nice Italian restaurant and was pleased to find it on the Wine Shop site. At the same time we bought some bottles of the standard version I added 3 bottles of this Reserva version. It was a gamble, because I find Reserva versions can either be a real step up or not to my palette. Sadly this one is the later. In one mouthful it’s quite thin and bland, in another there’s a background which I just don’t like. My son felt the same for the bottle we shared. I tried a second bottle with friends over the weekend and they didn’t like it. Sorry. I’ll stick to the standard version, which is great value.

Hi Steve — thank you for sharing such a considered review. It’s always valuable to hear from someone who knows and enjoys the standard Doppio Passo so well.

A Riserva is aged for longer, which generally brings extra complexity but can soften the bold, fruit-driven style that Primitivo fans love. As the regular Doppio Passo is a real powerhouse of ripe cherry fruit, it’s completely understandable that this Riserva felt lighter and less expressive by comparison.

Taste is personal, and it sounds as though this particular style simply wasn’t the right fit — but it’s great to hear the classic Doppio Passo remains the standout for you. Thank you again for giving the Riserva a try and for leaving such helpful feedback for other customers.
