Why we chose it

“Rioja Crianza at its most drinkable, with a year in oak behind it. Soft red fruit, vanilla and gentle tannins. My pick for a midweek roast or anything off the grill.”

About this wine

Crianza is where Rioja starts to show its character. A year in oak and a further year resting in bottle is enough to soften the edges of Tempranillo without burying its fruit, which is exactly what Bodegas El Coto has been doing from its cellars in Rioja Alta since 1970. The result is a red that tastes considered rather than young, at a price that lets you open it on a Tuesday.

Expect ripe red cherry and wild strawberry first, then vanilla and a warm hint of baking spice from the American oak. The tannins are soft and rounded, the finish gently savoury, and the whole thing carries the easy generosity that has made El Coto one of the most recognised names in Rioja. Pour it alongside roast lamb, a slow-cooked ragu or a plate of jamon and manchego.

About the producer

Bodegas El Coto was founded in 1970 in Rioja Alavesa and has grown to become one of Rioja's most celebrated producers, with over 700 hectares of vineyard spanning all three sub-zones of the DOCa. Their flagship Coto de Imaz range — named after the 16th-century Imaz monastery on the estate — is sourced exclusively from single-village Cenicero grapes and has defined benchmark Rioja Reserva and Gran Reserva quality for generations.
