Why we chose it

“Smith and Evans Higher Plot Trilogy 2 — a second cuvee from our local Somerset producer. Traditional-method English sparkling with real complexity and elegance.”

Kelli - Wine Buyer
About this wine

The Higher Plot vineyards are found on the White Lias limestone slopes near Langport in south Somerset, with ideal aspect and nutrients for making wine. Smith & Evans Trilogy 2 MV is the second release in their Trilogy series of multi-vintage English sparkling wines, a premium cuvée showcasing the complexity that comes from blending multiple vintages rather than expressing a single harvest, drawing mainly on 2013, 2014 and 2015. Champagne houses often have many reserve wines to choose from when blending their cuvées, and Guy from Smith & Evans describes this expression as an homage to Krug, renowned for its extensive reserve wine collection.

Trilogy 2 has been awarded 95 points by Decanter, the second time the wine has achieved that score, placing it among the highest-rated English sparkling wines currently available. Expect a fine, persistent mousse, citrus and apple fruit, toasted brioche and biscuit notes from extended lees ageing, fresh acidity balanced by considerable depth and texture, and a long, mineral finish. Enjoy as an aperitif and alongside seafood, shellfish, roast chicken or creamy cheeses; it should continue to develop well in bottle over the next five to ten years if stored correctly.

About the producer

Smith & Evans is a small, artisan English sparkling wine producer founded by Guy Smith and Laura Evans at their Higher Plot Farm on the edge of the Mendip Hills near Langport, Somerset. Their single-hectare vineyard — planted with Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay on well-drained south-facing slopes — produces wines of remarkable purity and precision using traditional Champagne methods. The Higher Plot Late Disgorged is a particular showcase of the depth achievable from this exceptional West Country site.
