About this wine

Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon

The Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet is one of Australia's best-known red blends. First released in 1976, it combines Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards across South Australia, with the Shiraz providing generous fruit and spice while the Cabernet contributes structure and fine tannins. It is designed to be approachable when young but has the ability to develop with a few years in bottle.

Tasting Notes

  • Colour: Deep ruby with purple hues.
  • Aromas: Blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, dark cherry, subtle mint, liquorice and sweet spice.
  • Palate: Rich black fruits, ripe plum and cassis supported by notes of chocolate, vanilla, cedar and black pepper.
  • Finish: Smooth, medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins and balanced oak giving a long finish.

Food Pairing

This versatile Australian blend works particularly well with:

  • Grilled ribeye or sirloin steak
  • Roast lamb with rosemary
  • Beef burgers
  • Barbecued sausages
  • Slow-cooked beef brisket
  • Mature Cheddar or Red Leicester

Serving

  • Serving temperature: 16–18°C
  • Decanting: 20–30 minutes is beneficial for younger vintages.
  • Cellaring: Most vintages will drink well immediately but can develop over 5–8 years.

For over 180 years, the winery has pursued a philosophy of excellence and multi-regional blending, producing wines from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and beyond.
