About this wine
The Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet is one of Australia's best-known red blends. First released in 1976, it combines Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards across South Australia, with the Shiraz providing generous fruit and spice while the Cabernet contributes structure and fine tannins. It is designed to be approachable when young but has the ability to develop with a few years in bottle.
Deep ruby with purple hues, it opens with blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and dark cherry, alongside subtle mint, liquorice and sweet spice. The palate offers rich black fruits, ripe plum and cassis supported by notes of chocolate, vanilla, cedar and black pepper, finishing smooth and medium to full-bodied with ripe tannins and balanced oak. Serve at 16 to 18°C, decanting younger vintages for 20 to 30 minutes, alongside grilled ribeye or sirloin steak, roast lamb with rosemary, beef burgers, barbecued sausages, slow-cooked brisket or mature Cheddar.
