What to expect
Most of us open Port once a year and take it on trust. This evening is a chance to find out what is actually in the bottle. We will pour the styles in sequence, starting with bright, berry-driven ruby and the richer Late Bottled Vintage, moving into aged tawny with its nutty, caramel character, and finishing with the vintage bottlings that reward keeping. Lined up together, the differences land in a way no back label manages.
We will explain what fortification does to a wine and why it matters, decode the age statements on a tawny label, and settle the question of how long a bottle lasts once it has been opened. Nibbles chosen to flatter each style come with the glasses. Whether Port is a lifelong habit or something you have only met at the end of a Christmas dinner, you will go home knowing which style is yours.
