Why we chose it

“Silent Noise Uva di Troia — a natural wine from Puglia’s ancient Uva di Troia grape. Dark, mineral and genuinely different. Silent Noise makes wines that make you think.”

Kelli - Wine Buyer
About this wine

Silent Noise Uva di Troia is an unusual Australian red made from the Italian grape Uva di Troia (also known as Nero di Troia). The fruit comes from what is reported to be Australia's only commercial vineyard planted with this variety, making it something of a curiosity.

Tasting notes

  • Aromas of black cherry, plum and violet
  • Hints of black pepper, dried herbs and spice
  • Medium-bodied with fresh acidity
  • Fine, firm tannins
  • Long, savoury finish with subtle earthy notes

Food pairing

This style works particularly well with:

  • Grilled lamb
  • Beef ragù or tomato-based pasta dishes
  • Chargrilled vegetables
  • Mature hard cheeses
  • Mediterranean cuisine with herbs and olive oil

Key facts

  • Country: Australia
  • Vintage:
  • Grape: 100% Uva di Troia (Nero di Troia)
  • Alcohol: 12.5% ABV
  • Style: Light to medium-bodied, aromatic red with fresh acidity and structured tannins.

At around £16.95, it offers something genuinely different for customers who enjoy discovering lesser-known grape varieties. It sits stylistically somewhere between a lighter Sangiovese and a fresher Nebbiolo, combining bright fruit with floral lift and a savoury finish.

About the producer

Kevin and Helen O'Brien bought a small vineyard and winery on Kangarilla Road in McLaren Vale in 1997, taking on plantings that date to the 1970s. Kevin, a Roseworthy oenology graduate, has made the wines ever since, joined by their son Charlie, whose Silent Noise label explores alternative varieties alongside the estate's savoury, spice-driven McLaren Vale reds.
