Why we chose it

“Four hundred and fifty-eight apple varieties in one bottle, which is either madness or genius. Somerset in a glass, and stronger than it tastes — go steady.”

About this wine

Thatchers 458 Cider is crafted from every one of the 458 apple varieties found in John Thatcher's Exhibition Orchard at Myrtle Farm in Somerset, a true showcase for the heritage of the apple. The Thatchers cider makers have carefully blended all 458 varieties to create a perfectly balanced, medium cider with plenty of body and depth of flavour. At 8.4% ABV, this is a cider of real substance.

Rich, rounded and complex, it rewards slow drinking and makes a fine partner for mature cheddar, roast pork or a hearty ploughman's. A limited-edition bottling that celebrates more than a century of Somerset cider-making.

About the producer

Thatchers has made cider at Myrtle Farm in Sandford, North Somerset, since William Thatcher pressed his first apples there in 1904. Four generations have followed, with Martin Thatcher running the business since 1992 and the fifth generation now coming through. The orchards around the farm still supply the fruit, from Katy to the traditional bittersweet Redstreak.
