The Grape That Found Its Voice in France
Sauvignon Blanc is one of the world's most widely planted white grape varieties, but its spiritual home is the Loire Valley in northern France. Here, in the villages of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, the grape produces wines of distinctive, mineral intensity — crisp, refreshing, and unmistakably expressive of their terroir. The flinty, almost smoky character of a fine Sancerre — grown on Kimmeridgian limestone rich in ancient marine fossils — is like nothing else in the wine world.
Within France, Sauvignon Blanc also plays a significant role in Bordeaux, where it is traditionally blended with Sémillon to make the dry whites of Entre-Deux-Mers and Pessac-Léognan. And in the sweet wines of Sauternes, it contributes vital acidity to balance the extraordinary richness that comes from botrytis-affected grapes. Interestingly, many wine drinkers enjoyed Sancerre and Sauternes for years without realising they shared a common variety.
New Zealand Changes Everything
The grape's international fame exploded when it found its second home in New Zealand's Marlborough region. The first commercial plantings were made in the 1970s, and by the 1990s Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc had become one of the most talked-about wines in the world. The style was a revelation: intensely aromatic, bursting with gooseberry, passionfruit, and lime, backed by vivid acidity that made it almost electric on the palate. Where the Loire produced something mineral and restrained, New Zealand produced something exuberant and tropical. Both are brilliant. Both are unmistakably Sauvignon Blanc.
Today the variety is grown in almost every major wine-producing country, from Chile and South Africa to Austria and northern Italy. Each region puts its own stamp on it, making Sauvignon Blanc one of the most versatile and diverse grapes in the world.
