About this wine

Central Otago is one of the wine world's most extraordinary regions — a remote, landlocked corner of New Zealand's South Island where dramatic mountain scenery, ancient schist soils, and long sunny days with cool nights create perfect conditions for producing world-class Pinot Noir. Akarua is one of the region's finest producers, and their Pinot Noir is a benchmark expression of everything that makes Central Otago so revered.

From the moment it's poured, this Pinot Noir announces itself with a vivid ruby colour and an expressive, fragrant bouquet of ripe cherry, dark plum, and raspberry, layered with subtle hints of forest floor, dried spice, and fine oak. On the palate, it's beautifully balanced — silky in texture, with fresh acidity, well-integrated tannins, and a persistently graceful finish that rewards thoughtful sipping.

Akarua's meticulous approach in the vineyard — including careful canopy management, yield restriction, and hand-harvesting — ensures that only the finest fruit reaches the winery. The wine is crafted with a light touch, allowing the terroir and the grape to speak for themselves rather than be masked by heavy winemaking intervention.

Central Otago Pinot Noir is widely regarded as some of the finest outside Burgundy, and Akarua's expression is a compelling argument for why. Pair with roasted duck breast, lamb cutlets with herbs, salmon en croûte, wild mushroom risotto, or a selection of fine cheeses.

About the producer

Founded in 1996 by Sir Clifford and Lady Marie Skeggs in Bannockburn, Central Otago, Akarua has grown into one of the region's most acclaimed estates. Named from the Maori for two vines, the estate now spans over 110 hectares across six vineyards. In 2022, Akarua was acquired by Edmond de Rothschild Heritage, joining a distinguished global portfolio of fine wine estates.
