Why we chose it

“Gigondas is Chateauneuf without the premium and Chapoutier’s version is outstanding — dark fruit, lavender, real Southern Rhône power. One of my favourite reds in the shop.”

About this wine

A powerful nose, alternating between strawberry jam and spicy, peppery notes. Similarly the palate is floral then spicy — the wine has superb tannic structure and lovely long-lingering flavours.

The soils of this A.O.C. cover sandy molasses, clay or old alluvial deposits with shingles. The grapes are destemmed and vinified in concrete tanks. Daily pumping over is carried out during alcoholic fermentation and the maturing takes place in concrete tanks over 8 months.

About the producer

M. Chapoutier is one of the Rhône Valley's most influential estates, with roots in Tain-l'Hermitage dating back to 1808. Under Michel Chapoutier's direction since 1990, the domaine converted entirely to biodynamic viticulture — one of the first major French producers to do so. Chapoutier crafts wines across the Northern and Southern Rhône, from benchmark Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie to Crozes-Hermitage and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as well as wines in Australia, Portugal, and Alsace.
