Why we chose it

“A proper Super Tuscan from the Tuscan coast — Merlot-led with Cab Franc and a touch of Cab Sauv, made with help from one of Bordeaux's most celebrated consultants. It has real grip and freshness, with that saline coastal quality Bolgheri wines do so well. Lovely with roast duck or a hearty ragu.”

About this wine

Fratini Clinio Toscana IGT is a beautifully crafted Super Tuscan from the Fratini estate on the Tuscan coast, blending Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon into a wine of real depth and elegance. Deep ruby in the glass, it opens with ripe red fruit, wild strawberry, violet and dried peony on the nose. On the palate it is juicy and generous, with firm but polished tannins, lively acidity and a distinctive savoury, saline quality that reflects the estate's proximity to the Mediterranean. Forest floor and eucalyptus linger on the long, satisfying finish.

The Fratini family acquired their sprawling 1,100-hectare Tuscan estate in 2016 and built a state-of-the-art winery, calling on the expertise of Eric Boissenot, the cellar consultant to four of Bordeaux's first growths. The vineyards sit on a plateau 100 to 280 metres above sea level, only two kilometres from the Mediterranean, lending Clinio a freshness and mineral character that sets it apart from landlocked Tuscany. Vegan-friendly and wonderfully versatile at the table, it is a natural match for pappardelle with ragù, roast duck or mushroom risotto, and an impressive choice for a special occasion.

About the producer

Fratini is a producer in the prestigious Bolgheri Superiore DOC on the Tuscan coast, a zone that gained international fame through Super Tuscan wines like Sassicaia and Ornellaia. The estate's Harte Bolgheri Superiore is a Bordeaux-variety blend — typically Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot — reflecting the Bolgheri philosophy of combining Italian terroir with internationally recognised grape varieties to produce wines of structure, concentration and Mediterranean warmth.
