About this wine

Made by the legendary Michel Chapoutier under his Bila-Haut label in the far south of France, this Banyuls Vin Doux Naturel is a beautifully crafted fortified wine from old Grenache Noir vines grown on the steep schist slopes above the village of Banyuls-sur-Mer. Deep ruby in the glass with an opulent nose of black cherry, cocoa, prunes and dried plum, the fortification arrests fermentation at exactly the right moment to preserve a wonderful natural sweetness. The palate is luscious yet never cloying, with a long, warming finish of dark fruit, spice and roasted mocha.

M. Chapoutier is renowned for their biodynamic viticulture and has been farming without synthetic inputs since 1991. Bila-Haut is the Chapoutier family's Languedoc-Roussillon estate, dedicated to expressing the wild, sun-drenched terroir of the Pyrenean foothills. This Banyuls is a classic match for chocolate fondant or a great wedge of Roquefort, and is equally wonderful savoured on its own as a digestif at the end of a long dinner.

About the producer

M. Chapoutier is one of the Rhône Valley's most influential estates, with roots in Tain-l'Hermitage dating back to 1808. Under Michel Chapoutier's direction since 1990, the domaine converted entirely to biodynamic viticulture — one of the first major French producers to do so. Chapoutier crafts wines across the Northern and Southern Rhône, from benchmark Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie to Crozes-Hermitage and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as well as wines in Australia, Portugal, and Alsace.
