Why we chose it

“Penfolds 128 Coonawarra Shiraz — Coonawarra gives Penfolds Shiraz more structure and elegance than the Barossa. Cedar, dark fruit and genuine class.”

About this wine

Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz showcases the distinctive character of South Australia's renowned Coonawarra region. Unlike many of the Penfolds Bin wines, Bin 128 is sourced exclusively from Coonawarra fruit, producing a cooler-climate Shiraz with elegance, freshness and excellent ageing potential. Matured in French oak rather than the American oak used for some other Penfolds reds, it offers a more restrained and savoury expression of Australian Shiraz.

The nose reveals aromas of blackberry, red cherry, plum, cracked black pepper and subtle spice, supported by hints of cedar, liquorice and earthy minerality. The palate is medium to full-bodied with vibrant dark fruit, savoury herbs, fine chalky tannins and a long, balanced finish that reflects the famous terra rossa soils of Coonawarra.

A superb partner for grilled lamb, roast beef, venison, duck and mature hard cheeses, Penfolds Bin 128 also rewards careful cellaring, developing greater complexity over the years.

Whether enjoyed now or laid down for the future, Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz is an excellent example of cool-climate Australian Shiraz, combining precision, finesse and the renowned consistency of Penfolds.
