About this wine

Quinta do Piloto Moscatel de Setúbal is a luscious fortified sweet wine from one of Portugal's great dessert wine appellations. Topaz in colour with amber glints, it opens with intense aromas of orange peel, quince marmalade and dried fruit, followed by caramel, gentle spice and delicate floral notes. Full-bodied and rich, its sweetness is beautifully balanced by fresh, natural acidity, carrying through to a long, citrus-scented finish.

This 2021 vintage is made from the Moscatel de Setúbal grape, the local name for Muscat of Alexandria, grown on the limestone slopes of the Serra da Arrábida and the sandy plains around Poceirão. Unusually, it is fermented and then aged for two years in large concrete ânforas at the family estate in Palmela, which keeps the fruit vivid and pure without any oak. Serve lightly chilled with an orange tart, lemon posset or crème caramel, or alongside a board of blue cheese at the end of a long dinner.

About the producer

Quinta do Piloto is a family estate in the Setúbal Peninsula, south of Lisbon, producing wines from the region's classic varieties including Castelão, Fernão Pires, and Moscatel de Setúbal. The Atlantic influence on the Setúbal Peninsula creates a cooler microclimate than inland Portugal, giving the wines a characteristic freshness alongside Mediterranean warmth.
