About this wine

The Setúbal Peninsula, immediately south of Lisbon, is one of Portugal's most underrated wine regions: a coastal area where Atlantic breezes temper the heat and ancient Castelão vines thrive in sandy soils. Quinta do Piloto is one of the region's leading estates, with a long history of producing expressive, characterful reds from this indigenous variety.

Serra Mae is a full-bodied expression of Castelão at its most compelling. The 2020 opens with dark cherry, plum and blackberry fruit, with layers of warming spice and an earthy, mineral finish that speaks of the Setúbal landscape. A confident, well-structured red that rewards those who venture beyond the mainstream Portuguese appellations.

About the producer

Quinta do Piloto is a family estate in the Setúbal Peninsula, south of Lisbon, producing wines from the region's classic varieties including Castelão, Fernão Pires, and Moscatel de Setúbal. The Atlantic influence on the Setúbal Peninsula creates a cooler microclimate than inland Portugal, giving the wines a characteristic freshness alongside Mediterranean warmth.
