Why we chose it

“The sweetest Madeira and the easiest to love — rich, raisiny and surprisingly fresh. Brilliant with Christmas cake or as a digestif. Madeira doesn’t go off once opened, which is a bonus.”

About this wine

Blandy's Malmsey 10 Year Old

Blandy's was founded in Madeira in 1811 and has remained in family hands for seven generations — the oldest and most celebrated Madeira wine house on the island. Malmsey is the sweetest and richest of the four classic Madeira styles, made from the Malvasia grape and aged through the island's unique estufagem process, which combines gentle heating with oxidative ageing to produce wines of extraordinary complexity and near-indestructible longevity.

The 10 Year Old expression is beautifully concentrated: honeyed apricot, orange peel, raisined fruit and warm spice combine on the nose, while the palate delivers luscious, balanced sweetness with the acidity that defines great Madeira. An exceptional after-dinner wine and a superb match for desserts, blue cheese or Christmas cake.

About the producer

Founded in 1811 by John Blandy, Blandy's is the oldest and most celebrated Madeira wine house, remaining in family hands for seven generations. The company controls extensive vineyard holdings across the island and maintains a historic lodge in Funchal with library wines dating back to the 19th century. Blandy's four classic styles — Sercial, Verdelho, Bual, and Malmsey — represent the finest expression of Madeira's unique and extraordinary fortified wine tradition.

I hadn't tasted Malmsey for many years. I was considering making Madeira sauce but thought better of it, made a red wine sauce and drank the Malmsey.
I'm no expert, and unlikely to have an attack of the Jilly Gooldens, but it was much enjoyed and I will definitely buy again.

Thanks so much, Frances! We loved reading your review – sounds like you made an excellent call swapping the sauce for a glass of Malmsey instead! It's brilliant to hear you enjoyed it so much, and your line about the Jilly Gooldens gave us a real smile. We’ll look forward to welcoming you back for your next bottle!
