Why we chose it

“Dried-grape reds can tip into sweetness, but this one keeps its shape. Plum, raisin and cocoa, and it wants roast beef or a hard cheese.”

About this wine

Dried Grapes, Deep Rewards

Appassimento is the Italian technique of drying grapes before pressing, concentrating the sugar and flavour until the wine arrives richer and rounder than the growing season alone would allow. This one is deep red in the glass, with aromas of ripe and dried fruit, plums and raisins to the fore. The palate brings chocolate and warm spice, and at 14.5% it has real weight without turning heavy or clumsy. Everything is balanced and mature.

Made by Botter, one of Italy's most reliable families of winemakers, this is a red for cold evenings and generous food. Try it with a rib of beef, a mature hard cheese, or a square of dark chocolate at the end of the night. It is vegan certified, and it is the sort of bottle that makes an ordinary supper feel considered.

About the producer

Casa Vinicola Botter was founded in 1928 when Carlo Botter and his wife Maria began selling wine in the village of Fossalta di Piave, near Venice. Now in its third generation under Luca, Annalisa, and Alessandro Botter, the family company has grown into one of Italy's largest wine exporters, with a capacity of 23.5 million litres and a range spanning every major Italian appellation. Their own labels — including Cortestrada — capture each region's character with reliability and craft.
