Why we chose it

“Hochar is Musar’s second label and the most accessible entry point into the house style — still complex and characterful, but approachable younger. Lebanese wine at its best.”

About this wine

Hochar Père et Fils is Château Musar's second wine and the softer, more immediate side of the estate, named for the father and son who built Musar's reputation. The 2021 blends Cinsault, Grenache and a little Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark ruby in the glass, it opens with cherry fruit, sweet spice and a wisp of smoke. Cherry and blackcurrant follow onto the palate, with a lift of rose petal that the Grenache brings in this vintage. It drinks very well now and has a long future ahead of it.

The fruit comes from a single vineyard in the western Bekaa Valley near Aana, where thirty-year-old vines sit at a thousand metres on deep gravel over limestone and give very little per hectare. Fermentation happens in cement vats with two to three weeks on the skins, followed by six months in French Nevers oak. Serve at 16 to 18°C with slow-roasted lamb, grilled merguez, spiced aubergine or a tomato-rich pasta.

About the producer

Founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar in the Bekaa Valley, Château Musar is Lebanon's most iconic winery and one of the world's legendary wine estates. The winery's bold, complex blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan — aged for years in barrel and bottle before release — have continued to be produced through war, siege, and adversity, earning the estate an almost mythical reputation. The Hochar family's commitment to their land and craft is one of wine's most remarkable stories.
