Why we chose it“A big Toro red that drinks far more easily than its strength suggests. Give it an hour in a decanter and serve with slow-roast lamb.”

About this wine
El Primer Paso, meaning "the first step", is a big, bold yet surprisingly drinkable red from Toro in north-west Spain, made entirely from Tinta de Toro, the region's own powerful strain of Tempranillo. Deep purple in the glass, it opens with blackberry, raspberry and dark fruits, edged with hints of vanilla, cocoa and a floral lift. The palate is dense and juicy without ever feeling heavy, with firm but rounded tannins and a long, fresh finish. Fermented in concrete and aged for six to eight months in French and American oak, it is lovely now and has the structure to develop for five to ten years.
Dominio del Bendito was founded in 2004 by Frenchman Antony Terryn, who settled in Toro to work its old, rugged vineyards. The fruit for El Primer Paso comes from small plots in La Jara and the heights of Valdefinjas, including ungrafted vines more than 45 years old, farmed without irrigation. Serve it with grilled or roast red meat, a slow-cooked lamb stew or a wedge of aged Manchego, and give it an hour to breathe for the best results. A superb introduction to one of Spain's most characterful red wine regions.
