Why we chose it

“More than a simple midweek red, though it is lovely midweek too. Foot-trodden and gently oaked, it is the bottle I would open with a Sunday roast of lamb.”

About this wine

Vinha dos Pardais Tinto is a generous, characterful red from Portugal's Setúbal Peninsula, blending Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional and the region's own Castelão. Deep garnet in the glass, it offers fleshy plum and dark forest fruits layered with warm spice, earthy and herbal notes and a hint of balsamic. The grapes are trodden by foot in traditional stone lagares and the wine spends six months in French oak, giving a smooth, well-structured palate with a lovely balance of ripeness and freshness.

The name comes from the Vineyard of Sparrows, a single vineyard area named after its feathered residents. It is made by Quinta do Piloto, the family estate in Palmela where fourth-generation winemaker Filipe Cardoso looks after some wonderful old Castelão vines. A little more than an easy everyday red, it is superb with roast lamb, a good steak or slow-cooked pork, and makes a rewarding discovery for anyone exploring Portugal's lesser-known regions.

About the producer

Quinta do Piloto is a family estate in the Setúbal Peninsula, south of Lisbon, producing wines from the region's classic varieties including Castelão, Fernão Pires, and Moscatel de Setúbal. The Atlantic influence on the Setúbal Peninsula creates a cooler microclimate than inland Portugal, giving the wines a characteristic freshness alongside Mediterranean warmth.
