Why we chose it

“Mature cider brandy cut with fresh apple juice, so it drinks like liquid orchard. Chilled before dinner is how I like it, though it does no harm over ice afterwards.”

About this wine

The Somerset Cider Brandy Company, based at Pass Vale Farm in the Parrett Valley, is the only UK producer licensed to distil apple spirit in the traditional manner. Pomona, named after the Roman goddess of orchards, is a unique blend of mature Somerset cider brandy and fresh unfermented apple juice, drawing on two centuries of tradition in Britain's premier cider county.

The result is a smooth, amber liqueur of real character: concentrated baked apple, warm vanilla and a gentle honeyed sweetness from the cider brandy, finishing clean and fresh. Perfect served chilled as an aperitif, over ice after dinner, or used to add a Somerset twist to cocktails and desserts.

About the producer

Julian Temperley bought Burrow Hill at Kingsbury Episcopi in 1969, and spent twenty years fighting for the licence that let him distil — granted in 1989, reviving a Somerset craft that had all but vanished. Cider apples from the surrounding orchards are pressed, fermented and distilled on the farm, then aged in oak. The Slow Food movement recognised the work in 2003.
