Why we chose it

“Certified organic Syrah from one of the Northern Rhône's great names. Fruit-forward enough for a weeknight roast but with the structure to reward a few years in the rack.”

About this wine

M. Chapoutier's Crozes-Hermitage Les Meysonniers is a wine of real character from the Rhône Valley's most expansive Syrah appellation, grown on south-facing alluvial terroirs shaped by the ancient terraces of the Rhône and Isère rivers. Made from organically farmed Syrah and vinified traditionally in concrete tanks, it pours a deep, vivid purplish-red in the glass, with a nose that opens on red fruits, blackcurrant and raspberry before giving way to a lovely lifted note of violet. The palate is ample and round, with warm, approachable tannins and a fleshy, generous finish of stewed fruit and vanilla, the result of twelve months of careful ageing — eighty-five per cent in concrete to preserve freshness and minerality, and fifteen per cent in barrel for structure and aromatic complexity.

Named after the estate's first owner, Les Meysonniers sits within Chapoutier's Prestige range and reflects their long commitment to organic viticulture, certified under FR-BIO-01 since 2012. Working without herbicides and ploughing the soil encourages the vine roots to drive deep into the sedimentary ground, producing wines with a subtlety and minerality that set them apart within the appellation. Equally at home alongside a slow-roasted leg of lamb, a beef casserole or a platter of hard cheeses, this is also a wine with real cellaring potential of five to seven years for those happy to wait.

About the producer

M. Chapoutier is one of the Rhône Valley's most influential estates, with roots in Tain-l'Hermitage dating back to 1808. Under Michel Chapoutier's direction since 1990, the domaine converted entirely to biodynamic viticulture — one of the first major French producers to do so. Chapoutier crafts wines across the Northern and Southern Rhône, from benchmark Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie to Crozes-Hermitage and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as well as wines in Australia, Portugal, and Alsace.
