Wine with tomato pasta · 186 wines

Tomato's acidity wants a wine to match it — Sangiovese (Chianti) is the benchmark, with Barbera and southern Italian reds also excellent.

Bolognese is a rich, meaty sauce with plenty of tomato acidity, and it needs a wine that can match both. Sangiovese-based reds are the natural choice: Chianti Classico is the classic pairing, its bright acidity and earthy cherry notes mirroring the tomato and herb flavours beautifully. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo offers terrific everyday value, while a Barbera d'Asti or Sicilian Nero d'Avola are also excellent choices for a weeknight bowl.
